As well as planning this year&#8217;s fieldwork season, we&#8217;ve been hard at work writing up our research, and are pleased to share news of our latest publication!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Recorder-cover-724x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-469\" width=\"278\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Recorder-cover-724x1024.jpg 724w, https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Recorder-cover-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Recorder-cover-768x1087.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Recorder-cover.jpg 826w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Spring 2023 edition of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/worcestershirearchaeologicalsociety.org.uk\/?page_id=78\">Worcestershire Recorder<\/a><\/em>, the bulletin of the <a href=\"http:\/\/worcestershirearchaeologicalsociety.org.uk\/\">Worcestershire Archaeological Society<\/a>, contains a fascinating article on the watercress trade in Victorian Worcestershire by our very own researchers, Murray Andrews and Francesca Llewellyn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article sprang out of NWAG&#8217;s work at Winnall Mill, where we found an enigmatic 19th-century domed structure built halfway beneath the ground. It looked a lot like a miniature icehouse, except it had no drain for the melt water to run off. In search of an interepretation, Francesca did some digging in the archives, and found several interesting references to commercial watercress farming in Ombersley and Hartlebury, including some that mentioned the Williams family of Winnall. Perhaps the structure at the mill was a &#8216;cool house&#8217;, designed to keep the bunches of watercress cool, damp, and fresh before they were shipped off to market? <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/09-Winnal-Mill-Nov-2011-28.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-470\" width=\"447\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/09-Winnal-Mill-Nov-2011-28.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/09-Winnal-Mill-Nov-2011-28-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peering into the &#8216;coolhouse&#8217; at Winnall Mill?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In any case, the research snowballed from there, and NWAG research soon uncovered evidence of a largely forgotten Worcestershire agricultural tradition, including stories of its major protagonists: from farmers and market gardeners to greengrocers, street hawkers, and even organised gangs of watercress thieves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to learn more about the research, the article is available for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northwag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Andrews-and-Llewellyn-2023-Watercress.pdf\">free from our website<\/a>.
